Seniors Learn Self Defense

When it comes to self defense, senior citizens have found that they are one of the most targeted groups. Their age has made them weaker and slower, which in turn makes them an easy target of crime.

Thankfully though, there are basic defense techniques available that can make a huge difference between being a statistic of crime and a survivor. When it comes to brutal crimes, committing them against the elderly is unthinkable, but unfortunately they do happen.

Now, though, there are countless seniors who are taking matters into their own hands. By simply employing familiar items, such as newspapers and canes, in addition to trying basic fight techniques, seniors are gaining vital knowledge when it comes to learning how to protect themselves and ultimately defeating an attacker.

In most cases when an attacker looks at an elderly person all they see is their white hair, without giving a thought to the age or condition that person may be in.

But through the self defense techniques that they are learning, their instructors show them important techniques for their safety. For example, they learn steps on how to transform a cane into a weapon which can then be employed to fend off an attacker.

Furthermore, the seniors go through the steps of how a rolled up magazine or newspaper can be transformed into a viable defense tool. You may be surprised to know that a rolled up New York Times has the potential to do a lot of damage.

Additionally, physical moves are instructed to be directed at the attacker’s face, which has been designed to deliver the most damage, but without throwing a senior off balance. Other techniques employed include the use of a pen for protection, confidence building and of course the use of common sense.

Regardless of how fit a senior may be, there will always be someone carrying a knife or gun. But being protected with your own self defense device and the basic defense techniques will greatly improve a person’s chances in a dangerous situation.

Of course, simply being a senior who knows how to defend themselves can tips the scale in their favor, simply because the act of fighting back is not expected which could ultimately throw their attacker off.
