Bear Sighting Prompts DNR Warning

result the Iowa Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologists have issued a warning to avoid the animal. The DNR warning comes after reports were received that individuals have been feeding the bear.

While the intention of the humans may be seen as a good way to help the animal in the months leading up to winter, it is not only dangerous for the humans undertaking this act, but could also prove dire for the bear involved. So much so that if the animal attacked any humans it could mean a death warrant for the bear.

Bears that are fed by humans can soon become a problem and a danger as they become more reliant on the food handouts. As a result of this, biologists are often forced to euthanize the bear. However, while many believe that simply moving the bear to another location will solve the problem in most cases it does not. Instead, moving the bear is just moving the issue along, and won’t stop the bear from expecting handouts.

The bear spotted in the Yellow River Forest is an ideal location for the bear, and because of this there is no need for humans to intervene in order to help it survive. The DNR is advising people to leave the bear alone.

If, however, a bear encounter does occur, regardless of the area you happen to be located in, it is important to remain calm. Any sudden movements that you make could potentially set a bear off, so it is important that you stand still. However, while the urge may be to run, this you should avoid doing, in addition to climbing a tree.

It is important that you also have bear spray on your person should you be entering bear territory. This is to ensure your safety if a bear does decide to approach you. Also make sure that the bear has a way to escape. A trapped bear will only increase its fury and its need to lash out at you which you do not want.

Bears are extremely resilient animals and are very capable of defending themselves. So while it may be tempting to offer food to a hungry bear avoid this and you will prevent one from being put down simply because it turned nasty after getting used to food handouts from humans.
