The Issue of TASER Devices

After a violent assault on two officers from the Town of Coeymans, the police department has become more insistent about the need for officers to be equipped with TASER devices.

Designed as a non-lethal weapon, this device has often been employed to deliver advantages to the numerous police departments that employ them across the United States.

The chief from the Town of Coeymans explained that if the self defense devices had been accessible to the officers, then they may have been able to avoid the injuries they incurred.

Even though the injuries may have been minor in this instance, the next time it happens the officers involved might not be so lucky.

Currently, the department are asking for three TASER devices. In order to pay for these tools, the Albany County District Attorney’s Make Crime Pay program would fund for one, while the second device would be paid through the police department’s asset account, and the third would be paid through funding.

However, while the tools have been used in countless police departments across the state, there are still people who believe that misuse of the tools is possible, even though they may improve the safety of an officer.

Of course, while this may be the view of many people, police departments insist that no officer will be equipped with a TASER device if they haven’t first completed their training. Not only that, but if the non-lethal tools are used to protect the public in addition to the officers who employ them, then the injuries the officers sustained may have been prevented.

Those within the police department find it interesting that even though the board will provide traditional firearms to officers without a problem, when it comes to the police department issuing a request for more effective non-lethal devices, they are jumping through hoops.

Additionally, some officers don’t understand how it can be a problem to utilize a less lethal form of protection when a firearm has the potential to take away a life.

The TASER device has been a well researched tool, and as a result there are plenty of agencies acorss the United States that employ their use as they’re known to be an excellent form of protection for officers and the public.
