A Lesson in Self Defense for Youngsters

The Riverdale/Pompton Lakes Junior Police Academy were recently taught self defense when an instructor of Traditional Okinawan Karate came in to instruct them.

During the class the many who attended were provided with various important features when it comes to knowing how to defend, such as blocking and striking techniques, how to fall safely, in addition to judo techniques.

The pupils at the class were instructed that karate alone does not always work. In most cases just simply utilizing your vocal cords is all that is required.

However, learning the art of self defense is never an easy exercise. The Police Academy youngsters found themselves sweating as they undertook the punching and kicking essentials, conditioning exercises, as well as practical techniques that enable an individual to escape and avoid a violent situation.

Furthermore, the youngsters of the Junior Police Academy learnt that Karate is an art that requires the discipline of the body and mind.

The students also took part in a question and answer period at the end of the class where they were told to always be aware of their surroundings in order to avoid having to resort to their self defense skills, and the importance that a push or grab can do.

In most cases, a bigger, stronger predator will generally seek a smaller, weaker person to victimize. However, the techniques that the Junior Police Academy students learnt will enable them to work on individuals whether they are big or small.

Of course, knowing how to protect yourself is extremely important in this day and age. The world is full of criminals lurking in dark alleys that are simply waiting for the right person to come along for them to attack. As a result of this, there are more people undertaking self defense classes so that if they should find themselves a target they will know how to defend themselves effectively.

Not only that, but learning the essential skills to maintaining your protection could be the difference between life and death. For that reason, there should be more people enrolling in the classes just so they can rest assured that they will know what to do in a dangerous situation.
