‘Heavy Man’ Unable to Fit in Police Car after Police TASER Him
A man who experienced the shock from a police officer’s TASER device has filed a lawsuit against four police officers and the Village of Riverdale after allegedly claiming that they targeted him because he was too big to fit in the back of a squad car.
The man filing the suit claims that Riverdale police targeted him with the stunning device simply because he was unable to fit through the doors of a police car in the month of August last year, outside his home.
The lawsuit, against two officers and two detectives’, claims that they were responding to a call at the man’s home; however when they arrived the man and his wife told the officers that everything was okay.
Even though the police were told everything was fine they still took the man into custody, where his wife told them he suffered from a number of medical illnesses, some of which include an irregular heartbeat, congestive heart failure, and hypertension, that required regular medication.
The suit goes on to claim that the officers then displayed the handcuffed man in front of his neighbors to a waiting police car. However when the man wasn’t able to fit through the squad car door they then proceeded to force his body through the doorway.
When this proved unsuccessful the officers then utilized their TASER weapons on the man stunning his countless times on the arms, chest, back, buttock and thighs. As the man was unarmed and in handcuffs, he was never aggressive to the officers, but tried unsuccessfully to cooperate until his subsequently fell to the ground.
The man claims that as a result he suffered serious and painful bodily injuries, emotional distress, and physical pain, in addition to being permanently disfigured.
Why the officers decided to pick on this man is not determined, but it does raise questions about the type of officers who are able to employ these tools on the streets. A TASER device is supposed to be utilized for the protection of those who require it, while subduing suspects who are aggressive and resist arrest.
This certainly wasn’t the case in this situation; however it should play as a stark reminder that while we may have been given a tool to defend ourselves there will always be someone else ready to operate that same device in an abusive manner regardless of who you are, or what your job profession is.
