It’s Time to be Bear Aware

Nowadays with the rise of bear activity in some parts of America and Canada officials are warning individuals on hikes and residents to be bear aware.

The recent bear attack to happen took place on July 10^th after a man was charged at and bitten by a bear while hiking with his brother. The investigation into the incident found that the bear had been eating a moose calf located nearby the trail the hikers were on. While the man attacked was carrying bear spray he was unable to employ the device before being knocked off his feet.

However, it wasn’t long afterwards that the bear left the scene without a trace.

The two men reported that they had initially noticed bear tracks before the incident took place and had attempted to make plenty of noise to alert the bear. Unfortunately with the thick vegetation, in addition to the wind and creek close by the noise they were attempting proved not as effective as they had hoped.

Of course, if any hikers are planning on exploring the many trails that are frequented by bears, signs should be noticed in areas warning of possible bear activity.

While walking, it is highly recommended that hikers should be cautious of their surroundings, but high on alert, and make plenty of noise. People should also become familiar with extreme bear use by noticing scat, diggings and tracks.

Another indication that individuals should look out for are flocks of ravens or magpies, which should alert hikers to the possibility that a carcass is close by, which should be avoided at all costs. Hiking during the morning hours is encouraged, while any dogs on the trail should be kept under control.

It’s generally known that individuals who encounter aggressive bears only do so when at a close distance. As a result of this it is important that plenty of noise is made, while traveling alone should be avoided, and bear spray should be ready on your person in case a situation should arise.
