Mountain Bikers Relive Grizzly Alaska Bear Attack

Three mountain bikers plus their pet dog are lucky to be alive with only minor injuries to worry about after escaping from a mother grizzly bear during a week adventure on Alaska’s well known Resurrection Pass Trail.

The three individuals involved and the dog named Kobi should serve as a reminder to anyone planning on entering bear country to make sure that they carry bear spray along with them. Not only does the powerful spray save lives, but it provides the added protection measures that are often needed when in unfamiliar locations that is regulated by big bears.

After journeying six miles into the trail the three riders found themselves confronted by the mother bear, plus her two cubs. As the mother considered them a threat to her babies she decided to charge at the group; however it wasn’t long before she stopped and turned her attention to the dog when it had started to growl and back at the bear.

The bear was then briefly seen chasing the dog, providing the bikers a chance at escape back down the trail. Unfortunately it wasn’t long before the charging bear appeared once again behind the riders continuing the pursuit.

Even though two of the riders managed to escape off the trail and into a clearing the bear still followed them, forcing one of the riders to press her body up against a tree.

In the midst of the confusion the mother bear was chasing each of the riders whom she considered were still a threat to her two cubs. And yet it wasn’t until the bear was on top of one of the male riders who managed to push the bear off that the bear spray inside one of the backpacks was finally utilized for their protection.

The spray canister proved to be extremely effective as the bear soon turned and ran away after staring at the three riders for one last time. Apart from scratches, bruises and a puncture wound on the thigh of one male rider, the three of them and their dog were able to escape from any further harm.

All in all an incredibly exciting adventure that the group had not foreseen, but with the help of their bear spray all of them managed to escape from what could have turned out much worse for them all.
