The Highland Park City Council has given permission to its Police Department to provide its officers with stun guns in a bid to deliver them nonlethal weapons that will greatly assist in disarming an individual who may be considered a threat to other people or who resists arrest.

The police chief of the department expressed to the members on the council that the department had been seeking the devices for around four years; however it is only with the new advances in the technological world, for example visual recordings of a stun guns use, as well as in-unit audio, that have made these self defense devices a bigger sort after tool for many police officers.

The video and audio in these devices will help to protect both the city and an officer from any possible claims of excessive force that could potentially lead to lawsuits. Every time an officer goes onto the streets with a stun gun they face a great amount of risk, knowing that the slightest mistake could be devastating not only to their careers, but to the people involved and the police department they work for. Additionally, a stun gun becomes known as a dangerous device when its main objective is to save peoples’ lives.

Not only that, but a nonlethal weapon such as these help to decrease risk of injury that an officer may incur, or the suspect involved. It also reduces the requirement to fire a traditional firearm that could cause life threatening results.

Of course one main way that will see these devices in proper hands is when an officer has undergone the necessary training required. For instance an officer will first have to be trained to exercise verbal and hand techniques which will aid to disable an individual before any type of force is employed with the help of a stun gun.

However, with the additional 16 devices costing around $19,000 there will be more officers on the streets who are not only trained in handling these devices, but there will also be more officers on the streets who can effectively, as a result, save the lives of many innocent individuals through the disabling, but nonlethal device of a stun gun.
