From the perspective of a bear, a small landfill in a Wyoming community might smell like a dinner too good to pass up, especially when there is meat processing and dead livestock dumped in a pit that is also located near to other trash.
However, there are some environmentalists who are weary of the pit that only has a short wire fence between potential hungry bears who may be tempted by its scent and want to discover its origin.
The first step to creating a dangerous bear is to locate garbage dumps where humans are, which causes the bear to associate this as their food source. One way to ensure a person’s safety is to always carry bear spray in areas that are populated with bears.
And yet, there are others who think that the landfills which are designed pits for dead animals aren’t uncommon, and therefore they aren’t a risk problem. But once again, there are those who aren’t so sure.
Since June bears have killed two people within 50 miles of this recent landfill in Wyoming. Furthermore, last summer a bear seriously injured a man only a few miles from the landfill.
In order to prevent bears from harming themselves and humans they might come into contact with, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department trapped two grizzlies this year at the landfill. In a bid to remove them from the sight they traveled around 100 miles away and placed them in remote areas south of the Yellowstone National Park.
However, while the attendant in charge of the landfill always carries bear spray, in addition to searching the area for any lurking bears before opening the gate each morning, caution still needs to be at the forefront of peoples’ minds.
Not only that, but if a person chooses to live in the same vicinity as bears then the need to exercise bear precaution is a definite must. Being aware of your surroundings, in addition to the spray canister, deterring a hungry bear will stop you from getting hurt when confronted by an angry bear, especially as the winter months slowly approach and bears continue their search for food.

There are many of us who have been able to retell dates that have gone badly; however for one couple they may be able to top most stories after their encounter with a fully grown black bear while the two of them were hiking in the Mission Mountains.
Luckily they managed to get away from the bear after running 40 minutes towards their car, out of breath, half blind and shoeless, only to realize that their car keys were inside the backpack that they had dropped when they initially began the chase back to their car.
Once again though the Gods seemed to be with them as their car had keyless entry.
When the couple stopped and decided on a place to camp for the night they turned around and noticed the black bear on all fours ambling up the trail 10 feet away. Pulling out the bear spray and yelling at the bear the bear started to turn away from one of the hikers to the other. While one made a phone call to alert those where they were, the second hiker waited until the bear was close enough before employing the spray canister, and then fleeing from the scene.
Unfortunately, the bear became angry and subsequently followed the pair and managed to push them 20 yards off the trail towards the river. One of the hikers then stopped, which made the bear stop and stare. After a number of seconds the bear began to walk towards the pair, and once again the hiker with the bear spray waited until the bear was close enough before utilizing the canister a second time.
Rushing towards the river, the pair climbed down a four foot ledge and slid into the water, under the impression that the bear wouldn’t follow them. So with water up to their knees and a fast current to tackle, the two hikers managed to make it to the other side safely.
The bear, on the other hand, wasn’t about to give up that easily. After climbing out on to a tree branch and jumping three feet into the water the bear made it across the river and began gaining on the two fleeing hikers.
The reason why the bear followed them may have been because the berries that are a favorite with bears bloomed late, and the bear was hungry.
While these two may be able to laugh about the incident now that ultimately brought them closer together, at the time it was no laughing matter. At one stage while they were crossing the river back, one hiker lost her footing and was sprayed in the face as she held onto her companion’s fingers that were also holding the bear spray.
With adrenaline pumping and the black bear no more than five feet away the self defense spray was employed again, which finally saw the bear turn and flee away.
After seeing the bear flee they turned their attention to finding the trail again, but it was no easy feat with one hiker suffering from the effects of the spray, as they stumbled over branches, fell into holes, and worried about the presence of the bear lurking nearby.
But, after 30 minutes of searching, losing shoes, being hit in the face with low branches, falling and stumbling into holes, they came upon the trail once again, before falling into their waiting vehicle with its keyless entry.

The police commissioner in the Northern Territory has said that TASER devices have become a useful tool for police to carry while on duty and wants every police patrol to be armed with these devices by the end of the year.
However, he stresses that this isn’t something the community should be concerned about. The officers who will be armed with the self defense device while on duty will just be armed with another weapon that they will be able to utilize if they are required to diffuse a violent situation.
There are currently 130 TASER weapons in police use in the Northern Territory, but guidelines for the use of these stunning devices are currently being upgraded. In order for all police patrols to be armed with the device 100 more will need to be bought to meet the demand.
Nowadays, it isn’t uncommon to see an officer walk around with one of these safety devices securely held in a holster. These days the tools are becoming a more common sight, as more police departments across the world are deciding to arm their officers with them. Not only are they effective at keeping an officer safe, but they also protect and defend those who need protecting.
In most cases the mere sight of a TASER device is enough to deter a potential suspect from continuing with their crimes; after all, who wants to feel the electric shock from one of these tools.
It is also hoped that with more police departments buying these devices for their officers the crime level will ultimately see a decline. Not only that, but the utilization of these devices won’t be as high as the sight of them works extremely well at deterring anyone from petty or violent crime.
Furthermore, if more officers are armed with a TASER device they will have a more suitable and safer weapon choice to employ should they require it, compared to the assistance from a traditional firearm.
We’re in a world where police departments are changing, and they’re looking for more humane ways to tackle a suspect without having to resort to bloody violence that a firearm will produce. This is ultimately where a self defense device such as a TASER comes into play.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Police Department responded as they should when their officers utilized pepper spray to stop a student organized protest that took place in March, according to a report that reviewed the incident.
However members of the panel who reviewed the incident did go on to say that the university police department should have taken the necessary steps to prepare for the protest. Officers were not ready with an incident action plan, in addition to not having any barricades set in place around the campus.
Not only that, but the officers found themselves lacking in vital equipment in the event of a protest, for example flexible handcuffs, headgear, police batons and larger canisters of pepper spray.
The report went on to state further that police radios came with their problems during the incident, while a bullhorn failed to even work when needed.
And yet the report which was taken by panel members outside the university seemed to place the entire blame on the students who were involved in the protest, while only pointing out a few of the problems that the police did. And yet, the executive director of ACLU of Wisconsin said that a working bullhorn would have made it easier for the protesters to understand the instructions from the officers.
The March rally which took place nationwide to criticize the increasing cost of higher education saw 16 people detained and 15 arrested at the protest at the University of Wisconsin.
While the protest was certainly not a violent one, the use of the pepper spray on the students at the university during an organized protest may raise a number of questions from many people; especially when it comes to the First Amendment and the students right to free speech.
If the university officers had been better prepared before the protest took place they may not have had to employ their canisters of pepper spray in the first place. However, as it goes they weren’t ready, and as a result they required its assistance.
This protest though should serve as a reminder to campus police to make sure that they are ready in the future for any other such activity that requires their presence. University is a place for students to enact their free speech, and they shouldn’t be taken down simply because others weren’t ready.
